Understanding Bird Migration

Tuesday, September 126:30—7:30 PMCollins Meeting RoomIpswich Public Library25 North Main Street, 25 North Main Street, Ipswich, MA, 01938

Spend the night listening to Scott Santino of Mass Audubon talk about bird migration!

Bird migration is one of nature's most amazing spectacles, and for good reason. A little more than 900 species of birds breed in North America and studies show nearly 40% are migratory. Researchers are using ground-breaking new technologies, from highly miniaturized transmitters to the Doppler weather radar network, to better understand migration. With this information, we can better conserve species which need specific breeding, wintering, and migratory stopover spaces. Discover the many ways birds migrate, why ornithologists think they migrate, and the extraordinary ways they've evolved for a life of almost constant motion.

Scott Santino is the Statewide Trips, Travel and Certificate Programs Manager and has been leading nature education programs for Mass Audubon since 1999. He is the coordinator and a faculty member of the Mass Audubon Birder’s Certificate Program, a college level ornithology course. He has led trips throughout New England and beyond, including Big Bend, Texas; Southern Florida; Southeast Arizona, Trinidad & Tobago; and the Galapagos Islands.
